Two letters written by William Jennings Martin: (1) letter (August 25, 1856) addressed to Oregon Territorial Secretary Benjamin F. Harding requesting the raising of a company of thirty troops in order to protect citizens and suppress Indian hostilities in the Umpqua Valley; (2) letter (June 1, 1888) sent to La Fayette Mosher and J.B. Nicles informing them of Martin's military service during Indian war in Florida (ca. 1840).
